Three Jobs on One Property

Panel Capacity Is the Gating Question
Every serious addition to a property — a workshop feeder, a new AC or heat pump, any large new load — draws from the same main panel. When that panel is older, capacity decides the order of operations, and sometimes the honest answer is that the panel needs attention before the project the owner actually called about can happen. Whole-House Surge Protection
Outages come with company: the voltage spikes that ride in as power blinks, drops, and comes back. Every restore event is a chance for a spike to reach whatever is plugged in, and the most expensive victims tend to be circuit boards — in HVAC equipment, appliances, and electronics. A whole-house surge protector mounts at the panel and clips those spikes before they reach the branch circuits. GFCI and AFCI Protection
Code has steadily expanded where it expects ground-fault and arc-fault protection, and a home wired decades ago almost always has less of both than code would call for today. That's not a citation waiting to happen, but it's worth knowing where a house stands — particularly GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor locations, and outbuildings, where moisture makes it earn its keep. Adding protection to existing circuits is contained, unglamorous work that changes what happens in a fault.
The Generator Conversation
After a storm week without power, generator questions come fast. That evaluation is residential electrical work, and it gets the same code-first treatment as anything else at the panel.
A portable generator must never be connected to household wiring through an outlet or any improvised hookup. Backfeeding can energize the utility lines outside the house and put line crews in danger, and it can destroy both the generator and the home's wiring. If a generator is part of your outage plan, the connection gets done properly or not at all.
When a Breaker Trip Could Be Either Trade
The most common ambiguous call in Scott: a breaker trips when the AC starts. The cause can live on either side of the disconnect — a compressor drawing more current as it wears, or a breaker or connection weakening with age — and the symptom looks identical either way.
