Check the Thermostat Mode Before You Assume the Worst
The fastest possible fix for warm air isn't a repair at all. Most thermostats have a Fan setting that is separate from Cool, and the blower will run on either one — but only Cool actually starts the outdoor unit and produces cold air.
If the thermostat got bumped to "Fan Only," or switched to "Heat" by accident, the system will blow constant air that is room temperature or genuinely warm, even though everything sounds like it's working.

If the mode was wrong, switching it to Cool and waiting a few minutes often solves it completely. If it was already set correctly and the air is still warm, the cause is mechanical, and it's time to keep reading.

- On heat pump systems only, a stuck reversing valve holding the system in heating mode even though the thermostat calls for cooling

Is Warm Air Dangerous, and Should You Shut the System Off?
On its own, warm air blowing from the vents is a comfort problem, not a safety one. You don't need to shut the system off just because it stopped cooling.

Does Waiting Make This Worse?
Yes, and this is the one place we'd push back if you're tempted to just live with it for a while.
A system running on low refrigerant is starving its compressor of the lubrication and cooling that refrigerant normally provides. Running it continuously in that state is one of the more common ways a repairable leak turns into a failed compressor.
The compressor is the most expensive single component in the system. A refrigerant leak caught early is a repair. The same leak ignored through a full cooling season can turn into a compressor replacement, or a conversation about replacing the whole unit.
What to Do While You Wait, and How to Avoid a Repeat

- Switch the thermostat to Fan Only or off if the system seems to be straining, rather than letting it run nonstop without actually cooling
- Keep the filter clean so you're not adding a second restriction on top of the real problem
- Close blinds and ease off heat-generating appliances to reduce the load until a technician arrives
Long-Term Prevention
- Change the air filter on a regular schedule, more often if you have pets
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of grass clippings, leaves, mulch, and overgrown landscaping
- Have the system checked seasonally, ideally before peak cooling season, so a slow leak or a dirty coil gets caught early
A Common Myth Worth Correcting
"Just add some refrigerant" is not routine maintenance, no matter how often it gets treated that way. A correctly charged, sealed system does not lose refrigerant through normal use.
If a system needs refrigerant added, refrigerant is leaking out somewhere. Topping it off without finding and repairing the leak is a temporary patch at best — the level drops again, and the compressor keeps absorbing the damage in the meantime.
A proper repair finds the leak, fixes it, and then brings the charge back to the correct level for that specific system.
