Noise by Noise: What Each Sound Means
What's actually making each sound below, and how worried to be about it.
Grinding, banging, and a steady electrical buzz are the noises where NILOV recommends switching the system off at the thermostat until it's been checked — running it longer risks turning a contained repair into a bigger one. Occasional startup or shutdown clicking, and a light rattle, are usually fine to leave running while you schedule a visit. Squealing or Screeching
A high-pitched squeal at startup or through the run cycle is one of the more common noise calls NILOV gets in Lafayette. Grinding

What's not normal is repeated, rapid clicking where the system tries to start, clicks, and never turns on. That pattern usually means the relay or contactor is failing and can't make contact. Banging or Clanking
Banging or clanking is one of the more alarming sounds, and it usually earns the alarm. It can mean a blower blade has come loose and is striking the housing on every rotation, a panel has worked loose inside the cabinet, or, in worse cases, that a compressor has developed a mechanical problem inside. Any of these can cause further damage if the system keeps running, so this is higher urgency: switch it off at the thermostat and call before running it again.
Buzzing
A steady, electrical-sounding buzz — different from the low hum of normal operation — usually traces back to a contactor with worn or pitted contacts, or a capacitor starting to fail. Both are common failure points on outdoor units running hard through a Louisiana summer. Buzzing deserves prompt attention, since a failing capacitor or contactor can eventually keep the system from starting at all. Hissing
A hissing sound, especially near the indoor unit or refrigerant lines, often points to a refrigerant leak. It's not usually an emergency in the next five minutes, but refrigerant loss over time can starve the compressor of the lubrication it depends on, turning a repairable leak into a compressor replacement if it goes unaddressed long enough.

Rattling
Rattling is the lowest-urgency noise here, and often the easiest to explain: loose screws or panels vibrating on the outdoor unit, or a stick, acorn, or leaf that's worked its way into the fan cage.
